Athlete Spotlight - Connie Roberts

Questions for Connie:

How long have you been racing? 

I did some sprint Tri’s beginning 2008. Once my hometown of Chattanooga started hosting IronMan events in 2014, it hit me that I would like to see if I could pull off an endurance event of this nature.

What are your goals for this season? 

I would like to be in the top 50% at the 70.3 Worlds.  As all Worlds it will be a challenging course, but I will go into the race prepared. I also have a marathon in November in which I am going for a BQ time.

Long Term? 

I don’t have any specific long term race goals, but always like to see how well I can get my body to perform year in and year out. This past year I have dealt with a few injuries, which is uncommon for me so my other goal would be to train and race smart to stay healthy.

What is your favorite workout? 

Climbing mountains on my bike.

What brought you to triathlon? 

I have been a runner for many years and was competitive in my age group.  As things in my personal life were changing I was looking for a different type of challenge physically and opportunities socially. Triathlon seemed to be a good fit for both.  

What did you do in 2020 to keep yourself motivated? 

With a career in healthcare administration, 2020 was year of continuous challenges. Training was my opportunity to escape those challenges for a period of time.  However, without races there were times I had to check my “why” and it would come back as always….enjoying seeing how I can get my body/mind to perform.  I did a little more cross training to mix things up a bit and really started to focus more on appropriate recovery (with much encouragement from my coach Dawn English).

What do you like to do besides triathlon? 

I am an outdoor junkie and enjoy water skiing, snow skiing, kayaking, hiking and recently have started to get into climbing.

When did you begin with OutRival Racing? 

I started with ORR in January 2019.

Why did you decide to train with ORR? 

I was looking for a change in coaching and a Tri friend recommended to me that I check out ORR.  I liked the choice of coaches and the resources available.

Who is your coach? 

Dawn English

What do you like best about working with your Coach Dawn? 

When I joined ORR it was the first time I would be coached remotely.  My one hesitancy was not having a local coach, but Dawn is so personable that the concern was very quickly out the window.  My goals are important to Dawn and my program is centered on what I would like to accomplish.  She has taught me a great deal about recovery and listening to my body in order to reach my goals and not just exercise/train. Encouragement is Dawn’s gift along with sharing her knowledge about all things Tri related.  She will challenge, motivate, educate, inspire me continuously. Dawn is authentic and that is easily notable in the way she coaches and relates to me.

Questions for Coach Dawn:

What do you like most about coaching Connie?

Connie has a great work ethic and openness to try different approaches for performance gains while respecting the process.  

She is a seasoned athlete with a great amount of knowledge in sports performance, heck she even works in the field.......But she maintains confidence without ego.

What is one thing which stands out most about Connie?

Positively Relentless!  Connie seeks to improve as an athlete day in and day out and does it all with a positive attitude and engaged mind and body.
